Hey people,
If I have music playing in one window whilst I'm doing something else in another, is it possible for me to have a different volume for the JAWS than for the music so I can hear the JAWS over the music? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Becky
Hmmm! Well, usually in Windows, if you hit JAWS/Insert/caps lock F11 and go in to the system tray, there should be a volume button. Hit V for Volume control or whatever that button says it is, enter on that. then look for "mixer button". Enter on that. There will be a series of individual volume controls depending on how many programs you have open. You should then just be able to tab round and adjust these to your liking with your arrow/cursor keys. That's the quickest way to adjust it, unless you're listening to music and JAWS and you know the keystrokes in your preferred media player to alter the volume. For example, Windows Media player: F8 for down, F9 for up or F7 for mute. Real player: control up and down arrows.

Because jaws uses the wave volume setting, there's no way at the moment to set jaws volume different than music, unless you're using winamp, then ya can have winamp's volume independent.
Hmmm, that's a shame. I did go into advanced volume settings and twiddle all the different settings, and out of "master volume", "wave volume", "SW synth volume", "line-in volume", and "CD player volume", the only two that changed when I used the arrows were master and wave. The only thing I found in the system tray, though, was "Windows Security".
Blimey! Well, you need to go in to taskbar and start menu properties and sort through your system tray icons in the appropriate tab. Volume should be one of those icons. To do this, go in to Control Pannel, Enter on Taskbar and start menu properties, best set Control pannel to Classic/screenreader friendly view before doing anything with it, then after you enter on Taskbar and start menu properties, CTRL Tab twice till you hear something like "notification area page" This should present you with options and checkboxes relating to the system tray. Check or uncheck which icons you want to display or which you don't want to display. Simple really.

I believe under windows seven you can set the volume for each of your programs. I haven't tried, but I'm almost positive you can.
Correct, this was a new feature for vista which works beautifully and windows 7 also, features a volume mixer
yes as mentioned above in vista nd and windows 7 you can set individual applications volume control. This however can not be done in XP. It seems like the original poster of this thread is using XP and not vista hence why the steps in post 2 did not work for her. If on XP you will have to turn down the volume in your media player then. I did come across an app for xp that gave you individual volume comtrol as in Vista but can't remember it but a google search may turn it up.
If your using XP and Jaws 10 or 9 simply buy a second sound card. One for Jaws will be cheap and you can get one that plugs in to a USB port. Office Depo has such a thing for about 17 dollars. You'll then want a cheap mixer, say 30 with 2 channels or a Y chord that can split your card on the computer and the UsB card. Rado Shack has such things, maybe 6 dollars. Your speakers go in to the Y or mixer, so if using the mixer you control with the switches, if using the Y control the main volume with the volume settings in Windows, the USB will stay the same, so your speakers could or probably have a volume switch on there to control that. So for about 30 you can listen to Jaws and web pages that have music and hear the Jaws easy. Otherwise the media players suggested on here would be the better choice for music listening and control.
If using headphones simply plug these in to the mixer, or that Y chord. Some have volume controls on them, or you can get a volume switch again from RadioShack, about 8 dollars.
Peace.
i still say a google search for that app that gives you volume control for individual apps in XP would be easier than the above solution IMO.
